The legends from the Fiji DMF have returned home after a huge week of charity dental work for Mamanuca Island locals on our neighbouring village of Solevu.
The Fiji DMF treat Namotu staff, Malolo children and adults plus staff from many, many other resorts, businesses and villages.
The 27 volunteer dentists, doctors, nurses and assistants were able to see 538 patients in 4 days. In total they performed 443 extractions, 230 fillings, 120 fluoride treatments and created and fitted 35 sets of false teeth/partial dentures.
For many Fijians in this area, the Fiji DMF provides not only the only dental treatment financially accessible (ie free and not a day’s travel away) but the only source of dental education. That’s huge for families, children and even the adults. There’s a lot we take for granted in other parts of the world but just having these services accessible is a big deal around here. And in time and with education we hope that these clinics will make a lasting and intergenerational difference.
