A Fiji Surf Challenge: Women’s Pro Surf Contest Comes To Namotu Island This May

Namotu Island Resort is proud to be a co-host of the 2014 Samsung Galaxy Women's World Championship Surf Tour. For the first time since 2006, the world's top female surfers will be able to test their skills at two of the most famous Fiji surf spots: Cloudbreak and Restaurants.

None of the seventeen surfers who are competing have ever been able to surf in a Fiji competition before, so we are looking forward to seeing them dig in to these famous left breaking reef swells and watching a leader emerge!

The Fiji Women's Pro event is the fifth of ten events that make up the 2014 Samsung Galaxy World Tour. The event kicks off May 24 and concludes on May 31. Surfers will compete for $250,000 in prize money, and bragging rights. The content will be live streamed at www.aspworldtour.com.

A Return To The Fiji Surf

Jessi Miley-Dyer was one of the last contestants to surf Fiji waters in this competition in 2006. In 2014, she is Deputy Commissioner of the event and one of her first actions as such was to remap the competition to include surfing in Fiji. Miley-Dyer feels that surfing in Fiji is the pinnacle of competitive surfing and something that should be earned through hard work and perseverance, making the opportunity all the more special.

A Lefthander's Challenge

Both Cloudbreak and Restaurants are left-hand reef breaks giving lefthanders an opportunity to show their stuff and test their mettle. Cloudbreak, in particular, is expected to challenge the surfers with heavy waves and fast barrelling lefts. The ladies will need to put all of their skills to use to navigate the complex waves Cloudbreak throws up.

Restaurants is expected to be more manageable in size, delivering long hollow lefts and great fun as surfers rip through barrels over a very shallow reef.

Relax Après Surf At Namotu Island Resort

After the competition is done for the day, we invite surfers and spectators to visit Namotu Island Resort for some of our famous Fiji hospitality and to discuss the events of the day.
