Choosing Gear To Surf Fiji

If you haven't discovered it already, you will soon – not all surfboards work well on all swells. At Namotu Island we see some serious surfers who want to know which board to bring with them on their trip in order to get the best experience. Luckily, you can surf in Fiji on almost any kind of board and still have a great day in the water.

There's Surf In Fiji For Everyone

There's a reason Fiji is one of the best surf spots in the world; it has it all. Longboarders, Shortboarders, Paddleboarders, and even Kite-surfers will find a spot they'll love to surf in Fiji. Newbies who have a beginner board will find suitable spots to hone their skills, while expert surfers come for the challenge that swells like Cloudbreak offer. You'll find swells ranging from 2 feet to 10 feet or more in height.

If you're coming to surf in Fiji, bring your typical gear. You'll want to surf with boards that you feel comfortable on to get the best results. Our local guides can help you get to the swells that will perform best for your board and surfing level.

That said, longer boards perform better in Fiji than shorter boards. If you have a choice, bring the longer board. 6'8" to 7'6" work well when you surf Fiji. The smaller boards just can't handle the powerful surf, except under the feet of very experienced surfers.

If you don't have a long board, don't worry. You can always rent a board to surf in Fiji if you want to try a longer one.

Don't Forget Your Other Gear

Don't forget a rash vest and possibly booties. Most of the swells in Fiji are over live coral reefs. Wipe out into one of those and "Ouch!". If you're not used to the strong rays of the sun, UV protective gear is also a good idea.

Fiji is more than just a surfing destination. There are adventures to be had onshore and under the waves too. Scuba diving and snorkelling are excellent in the Fiji reefs while the lush tropical islands yield some great hiking opportunities. Fishermen love the big game fish they can catch in Fiji. So if you have gear for any of these activities you might want to pack that too.

Finally, no matter how you plan to spend your time in Fiji, bring your camera! Fiji sunsets are breathtaking; the beaches are pristine and the waters crystal clear. Capture your trip in images so you can re-live it in your memory until you make it back to this little piece of paradise.
